In many arabian stories, Djinn are just powerful magical beings (demons), as they are portrayed in most of 1001 nights. The only story that has Djinn granting wishes, was Aladdin, which firstly was not part of the original 1001 nights, and the Djinn in that story were servant of the lamp/ring. I am assuming they were cursed, or bound to serve whoever held each object, possibly by another Djinn, or magician. Generally speaking, Djinn don't grant wishes. But because they had to obey whoever held the lamp, they had to do what Aladdin said.
