2008 Dodge Ram check engine light?

We bought this used in March. This morning the Change Oil light flashed and the check engine light came on and has not gone off. Does the check engine light go on with this model when the oil needs to be changed or is this a separate issue? The change oil light went off. It had an oil change last month because we were unsure if the dealer had changed it or not when we purchased it.
